in cleveland, ohio. he poked fun at governor romney's suggestion in wednesday's debate that he would defund pbs, the home of "sesame street." let's take a listen. >> even though he has been proposing this plan for months now, he has run into a little trouble explaining how it would work without blowing up the deficit or making it work for middle class families. the other night he ruled out asking millionaires and billionaires to ask to pay even a dime more in taxes. he said no way he is going to close loopholes that are giving big oil companies billions of dollars each year in corporate welfare. and in tax breaks for corporations that are shipping jobs overseas and profits overseas, he said he never heard of such a thing, never heard of it. who knew, he said. he acted shocked. said he needs a new accountant. his current accountant is doing just fine. when he was asked how he would actually cut spending and reduce the deficit, he said he would go after funding for public television. so for all you moms and kids out there, don't worry. somebody is finally getting tough on big bird. elmo, you bett

saw a documentary on pbs for what was called free elections that i have not had a chance to really look at it. it is about getting the votes to the people where they have to be obliged to the people. that is one thing. i would like to see cspan to start on that. every time i see wal-mart commercials and they talk about feeding the hungry and talk about how much money they have raised, it makes me so angry when they won't even pay their people a living wage. if we had a living wage, we would not have to have people would not have to have people on

the former anchor of pbs news hour has been seizing outreach by the suggestion that he was as safe and uninspired choice to moderate the first debate and he's offended by the reports that question whether the 12 presidential debate might bone too many. they say in this election living by a journalist doctrine of disengagement of reporter is never the story that has been harder than ever especially for those moderating debates. they go to because reassure the individual will be the moderators. we see martha raddatz but correspondent for abc news and will moderate the vice presidential debate and is the only moderator chosen who is not an anchor. candy crowley the host of the state of the union program on cnn will host one of the debates, and bob schiffer the cbs correspondent and a host of face the nation. tomorrow night they are hosting -- there are other stories in the people looking at the candidates and to do. at the university of massachusetts in boston. i'm jim lehrer of the newshour on pbs, and i welcome you to the first of three 90-minute debates between the democratic candidate for president, vice president al gore and the republican candidate, governor george w. bush of texas. the debates are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates and they will be conducted within formats and rules agreed to between the commission and the two campaigns. we'll have the candidates at podiums. no answer to a question can exceed two minutes. rebuttal is limited to one minute. but as moderator i have the option to follow up and to extend any particular give and take another three-and-a-half minutes. even then, no single answer can exceed two minutes. the candidates under their rules may not question each other directly. there will be no opening statements, but each candidate may have up to two minutes for a closing statement. the questions and the subjects were chosen by me alone. i have told no one from the two campaigns, or the commission, or anyone else involved what they are. there is a small audience i
